2013 was a banner year for environmental news. Government EPEAT guidelines went into effect after four years of negotiation, the latest and most stringent version of ENERGY STAR criteria were announced and BLI published its first “Guide to an Eco-Friendlier Office” and a record number of Environmental Test Reports on bliQ. Now, into its fifth year of environmental testing, BLI has produced its first environmental white paper that analyzes BLI-tested energy consumption and recovery time data across all product categories, segments and manufacturers tested to date.

Fujitsu recently announced a new scanner rental service called RentScan by Fujitsu designed to cater to any business looking for short-term capture functionality. The company offers monthly rental agreements for its 60-ppm (120 ipm) fi-6140Z/fi-6240Z series, 90-ppm (180 ipm) fi-6670/fi-6770 series and 130-ppm (260 ipm) fi-6800. However, additional Fujitsu scanners may become available for the service at a later date. According to Marni Carmichael, senior director of Fujitsu’s Enterprise Communications Management, the ScanSnap SV600 may be the next scanner available for rent. The SV600, which retails for $795, is an overhead scanning solution designed to capture images without contact.

The State of New Jersey is once again proposing legislation that would require manufacturers of inkjet printers to include the average cost per page to print 1,000 impressions on the device’s packaging. The bill, which had been previously introduced but expired without gubernatorial action at the end of the State’s last legislative session, has been reintroduced and approved by the Assembly Consumer Affairs Committee; it is now bound for the full Assembly.

Smartphones and tablets do a lot of things well, but one area where they fall short is in printing. Viewing documents, email messages and web pages is easy enough, but trying to get those to paper when needed can be a frustrating, multi-step exercise. Printer and MFP makers have responded by releasing mobile print apps for the popular smartphone operating systems, but those apps have their limitations. For starters, such apps work only with a subset of the maker’s own devices, which means a user might have to have several apps loaded if they use different brands of printers. Moreover, features and ease of use vary from one app to the next, and because of the way mobile operating systems render documents to be printed, the image quality of output can be less than ideal.

At least that was the overarching theme echoed by many of the speakers at the Managed Print Summit symposium, held late last year as part of the Business Imaging Expo trade show put on by The Imaging Channel. The presentations—delivered by a diverse group of analysts, OEM executives and managed print service providers during the day-long event—touched upon the challenges currently facing resellers that have embraced the MPS business model, along with ways for those dealers to overcome those challenges.
