In an era where innovation is paramount, the packaging industry is witnessing a transformative shift that is propelled by digital technology. As we approach drupa 2024, Jean Lloyd, Keypoint Intelligence’s Principal Analyst of Labels & Packaging, joined INKISH Founder and Editor Morton Reitoft in a conversation that shared insights on the evolution and impact of inkjet in the packaging market, as well as discussing the opportunities it presents to attendees at this year’s much-anticipated print show.

A lively conversation between the two industry experts highlights how digital printing is reshaping the packaging landscape, along with the advantages the technology brings to the market. Packaging is diverse and the shift to digital is characterized by labels leading and (to some extent) corrugated, too. Other segments, like flexible packaging, are somewhat behind.

Like her observations in the commercial print space, Jean notes numerous challenges—yet she also acknowledges that these can be addressed. For example, the introduction of high-speed, reliable digital presses answers the industry's call for better uptime and faster production rates. Jean also points to the rise of sustainability and connected packaging initiatives, showcasing the broader impact of digital technologies beyond mere printing in enabling brands to track their products more efficiently and enhancing consumer engagement.

The dialogue resonates with the in-depth research that Jean and her team have conducted as part of Keypoint Intelligence’s Labels & Packaging State of the Industry report series, which takes a deep dive into the current state of the market and its transformation. And while drupa is not a traditional packaging show, because many of the leading OEMs in the packaging space attend the event, it still presents a big opportunity for converters to explore broader technological developments, as well as in different types of packaging.
