Square 9 Softworks Acquired by Valsoft

Diving headfirst into the Intelligent Document Automation space

Valsoft Corporation has acquired Square 9 Softworks through its TAG Software Group, adding intelligent document processing (IDP), content management, and workflow automation to a software portfolio that already includes several companies working in and around document-based processes.

The recent announcement comes as Square 9 continues to shift beyond its roots in document capture and enterprise content management. Over the past several years, the company has put more emphasis on using artificial intelligence (AI) to extract, understand, and route information from documents with their various solutions. TransformAI supports template-free extraction, while InquireAI uses generative AI to identify information across documents that do not necessarily follow the same structure. Those capabilities sit alongside GlobalSearch for content management and GlobalAction for workflow automation. Together, they give Square 9 a way to handle more of the process that takes place after a document is captured. Information can be extracted, validated, stored, routed, and passed into other business systems rather than stopping at scanning or archiving.

That is also why the acquisition is worth watching from an intelligent document automation (IDA) standpoint. Square 9 already addresses many of the areas that now define IDA, including AI-assisted capture, document processing, content management, workflow, and integration. Common applications include accounts payable, order processing, employee onboarding, and contract-related processes.

For the time being, Valsoft does not appear to be changing how Square 9 operates. The company said Square 9 will continue to run independently, with its current employees and management team remaining in place and Stephen Young continuing as CEO. That should limit disruption for Square 9’s customers and partners while giving the business access to the resources of a much larger software organization.

This Is Not Valsoft’s First Document Play

Square 9 also fits into a pattern that has been developing across Valsoft’s acquisitions.

In 2022, Valsoft acquired WorkDynamics, bringing document management software into its portfolio. Later that year came MPS Monitor and Euroform, which added managed print monitoring and management capabilities. Irosoft joined in 2023, bringing software for document and legislative information management as well as natural language processing capabilities, as well as Nexera, which brough print industry benchmarking, business intelligence, and service management expertise. Valsoft then acquired ACOM Software in 2024, adding another business centered on document management, workflow, and payment process automation.

None of those companies are identical to Square 9, and Valsoft has not indicated that they will be combined into one offering. Still, there is a noticeable amount of common ground. The portfolio now ranges from managed print and document management into workflow automation, information processing, and AI-assisted IDP.

Keypoint Intelligence Opinion
For Keypoint Intelligence, the Square 9 deal is more interesting when viewed alongside those earlier acquisitions. Valsoft has steadily added businesses involved in managing documents and the information contained within them. Square 9 takes that activity further into IDA, where AI is being used not just to capture information but to help move it through business processes. Just as important is the ecosystem forming around these companies. As print, document management, workflow, and automation become more closely connected, there is growing value in businesses being able to draw on each other’s technology, expertise, channels, and customer relationships rather than operating entirely within their own markets.

What happens next is less clear. Valsoft generally leaves its companies to operate independently, so there is little reason to expect Square 9 to suddenly become part of a combined document platform. But having several businesses serving related markets could open other possibilities over time, whether through technology, channel expertise, customer relationships, or product development. Square 9 gives Valsoft another entry into a part of the document market that is changing quickly, and its AI and workflow capabilities make it a logical addition to the collection of document-focused software companies Valsoft has been building.
