The healthcare industry is undergoing a transformation due to technological advancements, like artificial intelligence (AI). Based on Keypoint Intelligence’s recent Healthcare AI State of Readiness analysis, it’s clear that AI is becoming increasingly significant in healthcare, but adoption levels vary significantly across different organizations with opportunities and challenges shaping its trajectory.

Where AI Stands in Healthcare

From a high level, AI is increasing in healthcare, but it’s not exactly everywhere...yet. According to our research, only 16% of healthcare organizations are fully immersed in AI across the board, while another 24% are dabbling with it in specific workflows. So, while adoption isn’t exactly taking the industry by storm, it’s definitely stirring things up.

Despite the gradual adoption, most healthcare leaders are on board with AI’s potential. About 86% of them see AI as a significant or even crucial part of their strategic plans. This shows that while the actual rollout might be slow, the excitement and plans for AI are gaining momentum.

Why Healthcare Is Looking to AI

What’s driving this shift and interest? The typical drivers are greater efficiency, improved customer experience, as well as faster and more accurate data analysis. In a field where every second counts, AI’s ability to streamline operations and speed up processes is critical. AI can reduce the time spent on tasks by automating financial processes, customer support, and human resources tasks so that healthcare professionals can focus on what really matters: patient care.

AI is also making strides in areas like medical imaging, where it’s being used to analyze medical images with greater accuracy. In addition, AI is also playing a role in document and data management, where generative AI is helping to create, sort, and manage information in ways that were previously not possible.

Bumps on the AI Road

Of course, it’s not all smooth sailing. AI in healthcare comes with its fair share of challenges. At the top of the list are concerns about privacy and the potential for AI to make mistakes that could affect patient care. In a field where errors can be life threatening, it’s understandable that healthcare providers are treading carefully.

There’s also an issue with infrastructure limitations. While some organizations are equipped with the digital tools needed to support AI, others are lagging. Although there is budget being allocated to AI projects—about 27% on average—it’s still a bit lower than what other industries are spending.

Looking Ahead

AI in healthcare is on the rise, but many organizations are taking a cautious approach. While the potential impact is significant, there are many barriers to overcome before it can truly transform the industry. With continued investment, modernized infrastructure, and a focus on addressing the challenges head-on, AI could soon become integral to healthcare.
