TikTok: the global sensation that kept us dancing like fools and “awing” at cute animal videos during the height of the pandemic. Even its loudest critics cannot deny that they have probably watched a TikTok video whilst using another social media platform, or accidentally opened a link shared by a family member or friend in a message. Like it or loathe it, the platform has infiltrated many aspects of popular culture—and it’s not going anywhere anytime soon.
But can it be a force for good? A recent trend has helped spark a surge in sales for printed books: BookTok. The format is quite simple. A “BookTokker” reviews a book they’re currently reading, the viewer watches the video, and then potentially buys the book. Will this trend mark the next phase in successful collaboration between the print publishing industry and social media? Judging by the stats, yes!
