The 2025 APPPEXPO, held in Shanghai from March 4-7 at the National Exhibition and Convention Center, served as a pivotal platform for seeing the latest advancements in the advertising, printing, and packaging industries. With a sprawling exhibition area of 170,000 square meters, the event attracted approximately 180,000 visitors and featured nearly 1,700 exhibitors, which further strengthened its significance as a global flagship event. This year’s show highlighted three prominent trends: UV direct-to-film (DTF) with foil stamping, charge-coupled device (CCD) UV flatbed printers, and DTF machines utilizing Android/cloud-based operating systems.

UV DTF with Foil Stamping
UV DTF printing has taken the next step with foil stamping, enhancing the appeal of printed materials and adding a premium embellishment. The technique involves printing clear UV varnish after CMYK+W inks on certain areas of the print (or by printing 100% white and varnish designs for complete foiling). This is followed by the application of metallic foils using heat that causes the foil to stick to the UV varnish to create dramatic visual effects. The integration of foil not only adds a premium finish, but also expands the creative possibilities for print service providers (PSPs).
Several exhibitors demonstrated the capabilities of UV DTF with foil. For instance, Sky-Color, a Chinese printer manufacturer, showcased their SF60-4 UV DTF printer capable of producing high-quality prints with foil embellishments. Visitors had the opportunity to witness live demonstrations and explore the full potential of this technology.

CCD UV Flatbed Printers
CCD technology has been integrated into UV flatbed printers to enhance precision and efficiency, enabling accurate media detection and print alignment without the need for “jigs” that hold parts in a certain orientation with pre-determined spacing. With CCD, the user simply places parts on the print bed and the CCD camera identifies the location of each part and sends that data to the printheads. Systems like the WLD-1220 from Wan Li Da use a conveyor bed with a stationary print gantry. The infeed side of the gantry has the CCD camera and the outfeed side has the printheads. This advancement is particularly beneficial for sign and graphics PSPs to diversify their product offerings.

Printers with Android/Cloud-Based Operating Systems
The adoption of Android and cloud-based operating systems in DTF machines represent a significant shift towards user-friendly interfaces and enhanced connectivity without needing a computer connected to the printer. Using these systems allows operators to control printers via familiar Android platforms as well as enable remote monitoring and management through cloud services. The benefits include streamlined workflows, real-time data access, and the potential for integrating with other digital solutions.

Several models featuring Android or cloud-based operating systems were prominently highlighted at the expo, and the trend towards smarter and more connected DTF solutions was evident. Manufacturers emphasized the importance of integrating modern operating systems to improve usability and operational efficiency. This development aligns with the broader industry movement towards automation and intelligent manufacturing processes.
