HP and Canva announced a partnership, and we at Keypoint Intelligence wanted to dig a little deeper into understanding what it means and its impact to the industry.

The Background

Canva, a graphic design platform founded in 2013, has rapidly grown to become a dominant force in digital design. Known for its user-friendly interface and extensive design tools, Canva supports a wide range of outputs including social media graphics, presentations, and print designs. HP has been working with Canva since 2017, helping to expand its print services. This new partnership leverages HP’s extensive printing capabilities to meet the growing demands of Canva’s global user base.

Canva Results.

The Details

The three-year partnership aims to enhance the efficiency and reach of Canva’s print services. Since its inception, Canva has expanded to 99 countries and is supported by 65 print service providers (PSPs). Canva has the goal to reach 150 countries within three years, and HP will assist them in finding and onboarding local PSPs, ensuring high-quality print standards using HP Indigo and HP Latex technologies.

HP will also provide advanced data management and order routing tools, enabling Canva to maintain service quality and efficiency. This includes a professional color management service to ensure consistency across all print outputs. Additionally, the HP PrintOS platform will support Canva in managing its extensive product catalog, facilitating faster and more efficient supplier onboarding.

HP’s involvement extends to deploying Canva’s enterprise solution within its own teams, utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance agility and time to market. This comprehensive collaboration is designed to support Canva’s rapid growth while maintaining the high standards that users expect.

The Benefits

The partnership offers substantial benefits to HP, Canva, and their customers and partners. For HP, the collaboration maximizes the flow of print orders to HP-enabled PSPs, driving demand for HP printing technology. This reinforces HP’s position as a central player in the print industry, aligning with its goals of sustainability and localized production.

For Canva, it means enhanced print service capabilities, allowing for faster and more reliable delivery of print products. By leveraging HP’s technology and expertise, Canva can expand its market reach and improve service quality, catering to its large and growing user base more effectively. The professional color management and data tools provided by HP will help Canva maintain consistency and quality across all print outputs.

Customers and partners stand to benefit from the improved efficiency and quality of Canva’s print services. Local PSPs gain access to advanced HP printing technology and the potential for increased order volumes—driving growth and profitability. The localized approach also enhances sustainability through reduction of transportation needs and associated environmental impacts.

Keypoint Intelligence Opinion

The strategic nature of the partnership—focusing on scalability, quality, and efficiency—is key here. While print is not Canva’s primary focus, the partnership significantly enhances the value proposition for users requiring print services. This partnership mutually benefits both companies with a strategic alignment to drive automation and efficiency in print production.

The partnership also has tremendous potential to streamline PSP operations and boost their profitability. Automation helps reduce labor costs while delivering consistent quality, but many PSPs have struggled to implement it. While there are probably challenges inherent in such a large-scale collaboration, we are confident that these two industry giants will succeed.
