HP is sharpening its focus on the publishing and commercial print markets, while accelerating the transition of print volumes from offset to digital. Ahead of Hunkeler Innovationdays, the company has announced the launch of the new PageWide Web Press T500M HD press and a new flagship press in the T400 Series—which is now being introduced as the T4250 HDR.

PageWide Industrial T500M HD: Enhancing Book Printing Productivity

The T500M HD is designed to serve the book printing market (an area HP has been actively investing in)  as well as from a business development standpoint. Through initiatives such as ConTEXT, webinars, and industry association activities, HP continues to support and collaborate with book printers and publishers in optimizing production and supply chain efficiencies.

This new press is set to further accelerate the shift from offset to digital, offering high-speed black and white printing with a 54" width and speeds up to 1,000 feet per minute (fpm) (305 meters per minute, mpm) in performance mode (one drop size) and 500 fpm (152 mpm) in quality mode (two drop sizes). The 54" width plays a crucial role in productivity gains.

Competitively, Koenig & Bauer’s RotaJET also targets the book printing sector, offering a maximum 66" width but operating at lower speeds depending on resolution settings (40 to 135 m/min at 1,200 x 1,200 dpi, up to 270 m/min at 1,200 x 600 dpi).

As publishers seek localized production to mitigate challenges—such as turnaround time, shipping costs, supply chain disruptions, and inventory management—the T500M HD presents a compelling solution for book printers looking to increase digital printing productivity.

PageWide Industrial T4250 HDR: Advancing Commercial Printing Capabilities

One of HP’s unique selling points is their 42" (106 cm) roll-fed inkjet press tailored for commercial applications—an area that has experienced significant growth as print volumes shift from offset to digital. To support this momentum, HP has introduced the T4250 HDR, which is designed to add more value in the different areas of print service providers’ buying criteria: quality, productivity, cost efficiency, and sustainability.

The T4250 HDR delivers twice the productivity of its predecessor (the T485 HD) across various applications and paper types. This improvement is driven by HP’s new Brilliant B70 inks, which dry faster and allow for higher-speed printing. Key performance metrics include:

  • 800 fpm (244 mpm) in performance mode (one drop size).
  • 500 fpm (152 mpm) in quality mode (dual drop sizes).

Enhanced printheads with ink recirculation and temperature management improve print quality, particularly in solid color areas. Moreover, cost savings are realized through reduced energy consumption thanks to faster drying times and the elimination of spit bars, which minimizes paper and ink waste.

From a sustainability standpoint, the Brilliant B70 inks feature lower volatile organic compounds and the press itself uses up to 50% less drying energy, making it one of HP’s most environmentally friendly digital presses to date.

The T4250 HDR will be available for order by the end of 2025.

Keypoint Intelligence Opinion

The transition from offset to digital remains the primary growth opportunity for digital printing manufacturers. To accelerate this shift, productivity and cost efficiency are critical factors. HP’s latest roll-fed inkjet innovations—offering wider widths, higher speeds, and lower operational costs—strengthen the company’s position in driving greater adoption of digital printing.
