WhatTheyThink Managing Editor Richard Romano recently sat down with our very own Charles Lissenburg, Director of European Sales & Keypoint Intelligence’s Production Group, to discuss the main takeaways from Hunkeler Innovationdays and broader trends in the European print industry. Held at the Lucerne Exhibition Center in Switzerland, this year’s event showcased diversity of exhibitors—including 41 finishing companies—and really spoke to the evolution of the show. It has truly grown from a small customer gathering into a full-fledged exhibition complete with live demos, integrations, and a major focus on software and workflow.
During their chat, Lissenburg points out that he was surprised to see 19 substrate vendors as substrates are sometimes overlooked, but remain critical to the printing process. The event also emphasized the growing role of robotics and automation as labor shortages continue to challenge the industry. While analog systems require more workforce investment, digital solutions aren’t a silver bullet, and intelligent automation is necessary to bridge knowledge gaps and ensure high-quality output. Looking ahead, Lissenburg predicts that robotics and automation, already widely used in warehouses, will become increasingly essential in print production. With 6,500 attendees, the enthusiasm at Hunkeler Innovationdays underscores the industry’s keen interest in the advancements shaping the future of print.
