Looking at European printer data from 2024, the previous shift from A3 to A4 launches has changed with MFP launches now at half and half. While A4 printers remain a staple for businesses and home offices, several market forces have contributed to a slowdown in new models. At the same time, A3 devices have seen an uptick in launches. So, what’s driving this shift?

3 Reasons Why A4 Printer Product Launches Are Slowing Down

  • Market Maturity: Many businesses and consumers already have reliable A4 printers, reducing the need for frequent upgrades.
  • Digital Transformation (DX): Companies are transitioning to paperless workflows, cloud document management, and mobile solutions—thereby diminishing the demand for traditional printing.
  • Supply Chain Challenges: Global chip shortages and rising production costs have made it harder for manufacturers to release new models at the same pace as before.

3 Reasons Why A3 Printers Are Gaining Traction

  • Sustainability Priorities: Instead of launching new devices, manufacturers are focusing on energy-efficient designs and longer product lifecycles to align with eco-friendly initiatives.
  • Shifting Office Needs: Post-COVID returns to the office as well as the consolidation of office space in hybrid work have driven the need for shared A3 multifunction devices.
  • Profit Margins: A3 printers typically offer higher profit margins for manufacturers, leading to increased R&D and new product releases in this category.

The shift in the A4 and A3 printer market reflects evolving business needs, economic conditions, and digital transformation. While A4 printers remain a crucial part of many workplaces, manufacturers are focusing on smarter, more sustainable, and high-performance solutions.
