Our experts are constantly producing content across a variety of topics. We also know that time is limited and there are plenty of reports flying across everyone’s desk at any time. Automation has become a bit of a buzzword for many businesses: “We need to engage in automation solutions to maximize potential ROI and overcome market stagnation.” If you want to be able to say more than “Sure thing, Bob” then you got to understand what automation can provide and what it can’t.
In our recent US and Western European 2025 Automation Adoption in Document Workflow reports, we ran through what technology is currently available for the market, investment plans and business priorities, the effects of hybrid working environments and tariffs, vertical-specific trends, as well as the effects of artificial intelligence (AI) on automation software and solutions.
These AI solutions are designed to address touchpoints and complete tasks that don’t require human intervention so that employees can focus more on the creative or more complicated aspects of their jobs. Examples include chatbots to handle customer inquiries and resolve issues; invoice processing, expense reporting, and fraud detection for financial companies; optimizing inventory management; automating order processing; improving logistics; or even quality control, predictive maintenance, and robotic assembly for manufacturers.
In our report, we asked the question “What are your investment plans for the next 12 months?” to 298 US and 233 Western European IT decision-makers. While the overwhelming majority in both regions are planning on increasing AI capabilities in their workflows, the shift is expected to be more “moderate” than a “significant” addition.
This hesitancy to invest more in AI automation could be due to a lack of education for what automation can do or what’s available as well as misunderstanding what software or services are currently available. Regardless, there are plenty of opportunities to learn more about what automation can and can’t do. Check out our 2025 Automation Adoption in Document Workflow reports to learn more to figure out what automation solutions are available.
